Company Overview

Indus Refinery Limited (IRL) was established in 2004 to address Pakistan's severe shortage of refined petroleum products, which were being largely imported from the Middle East. Recognizing the urgent national need to bridge the demand-supply gap, IRL took swift action to set up a world-class refining facility in Karachi.

IRL was initially working to acquire a 93,000 barrels per stream day (BPSD) state-of-the-art complete downstream unit, capable of producing multiple petroleum products, from Petro Canada, comprising two processing trains of 50,000 BPSD and 43,000 BPSD respectively.

In addition, IRL acquired 305.21 acres of prime land on the National Highway, near Port Qasim Karachi, the country's key oil import hub. The location offers direct access to the national pipeline network and close proximity to major oil marketing company terminals, ensuring smooth and cost-efficient distribution of refined products across Pakistan.

Later on, keeping in view the global transitioning from Euro-III to Euro-V fuel standards, IRL decided to switch towards developing a new, state-of-the-art 120,000 BPSD Euro-V compliant refinery. This transformation aligned the project with modern environmental standards, enhanced operational efficiency, and significantly improved overall project economics.
